This is the first time we are speaking about what we went through

Sulamit Sittsamer 1925–

Sulamit was born into a Jewish family in Poland. When the war came the family was separated and Sulamit and her younger brother were taken to the Lodz ghetto. Nothing is known about the fate of her other family members.

In Lodz it was very difficult to survive. Food was scarce and Sulamit was forced to work. One morning she woke up to find her brother lying dead in their bed.

From Lodz she was taken to the Birkenau extermination camp. There she waited to be killed but was saved by chance. Instead she was transported to an arms factory in Berlin.

Near the end of the war all the Jews were sent from the factory to Ravensbrück. When the white buses came, at first she did not dare to go with them, terrified that the bus trip would take her to her death.

After she had been rescued Sulamit felt emotionally empty. Even though the streets were lined with cheering people she felt nothing.

After she was well again she found work with a family in Malmö. Soon afterwards she met Bezalel. He had also suffered through the horrors of the prison camps and come to Malmö after the war.
