A piece of soap, a ring, a piece of jewellery
Janina Ciulak 1919-2002
Janina’s mother died when she was a small child.
When she was 15 she was forced to leave her family
to work in Warsaw.
Janina was seized by the Nazis
because she had friends who were active in the Resistance.
She was taken to several different camps
and ended up in Ravensbrück.
In the camp she worked nights in an arms factory.
A piece of soap, a ring, a piece of jewellery.
Personal possessions were forbidden in the camp.
To Janina they meant cleanliness, life and love.
Once disaster almost struck.
She kept the ring hidden inside the soap.
A guard took the soap and broke it in half
but did not find the ring.
Janina was saved by the White Buses and came to the refugee centre at Malmö Museum.
At first it felt unreal to be in Sweden.
She could not believe that she had actually survived.
After five days at the museum she was moved to Onslunda together with other women from Poland. Janina later married and had two children.
The family worked on several farms in Skåne.
