Amano Shrimp

Caridina multidentata

Size: 5-6 cm long.
Lifespan: About 2-3 years.
Food: Mainly algae.

Moults regularly

The Amano shrimp lives in freshwater and brackish water, in rivers and streams. It hides from predators in the thick vegetation on the bottom. Amano shrimp are so-called true shrimp and they are very active and live in large schools. They spend a lot of time eating algae, and they moult regularly. The Amano shrimp is a popular aquarium species as it eats algae, thus helping to keep the tank clean.

Larvae needs brackish water

The female is larger than the male because she has a space under the belly where she keeps her eggs. The female releases pheromones into the water when the eggs are ready to be fertilised. The pheromones are produced in the female’s body and released into the water as a signal that other members of its species read. After the eggs hatch, the larvae live in brackish water until they have developed into small shrimp; then they find their way into freshwater rivers.
